Goods swaps, design and do-it-yourself fun at the Recycling Factory The Recycling Factory event, organised at the Merikaapelihalli of Helsinki’s Cable Factory on 25 and 26 April 2009, offers visitors a goods market, sales market and information market, along with workshops, shows, exhibitions and seminars. More than 50 exhibitors, including recycling and environmental organisations as well as design companies, are represented at the event. New features this year include the Risain competition, open for entries for design creations made of recycled materials. The Recycling Factory was first organised in the spring of 2008, with more than 4,000 visitors attending this free-of-charge family event. This year, the event is organised as a part of the national More from Less by Sufficiency week, concentrating this year on the theme of consumer electronics. The same weekend features the Hulinat event organised by Kestovaippayhdistys, an association promoting the use of reusable nappies, and the Ruutia! festival by Dance Theatre Hurjaruuth. The Goods Market operates on the principle of "bring or take". Throughout the weekend, you can bring clothes, toys, books and other household goods that are fit for use to the market. You can take with you anything you need. The Sales Market has clothes, jewellery and bags made of recycled materials to offer, as well as organic and fair trade products. Do-it-yourself workshops offer an opportunity to try out crafting a scrap sculpture or to show your skills in making a piece of jewellery for Mother’s Day. The Information Market is the forum for learning more about environmental and recycling organisations. Recycling Factory features a brand new competition Have you ever created something brand new out of something old? Candlesticks from metal scraps, a laptop cover out of a used hat, or anything at all made of recycled materials? This year’s new competition – entitled Risain – is open for entry to private individuals only, which is the Recycling Factory’s way of promoting the recycling design ideas of handicraft enthusiasts. You can enter the competition by sending any item of your choice – as long as it is relatively small in size and made of recycled materials – to the Cable Factory no later than 17 April. The jury – nominated by the Recycling Factory – will select the winner, who will receive an award, at the event on 25 April. All entries will be included in an exhibition at the event.
