“That’s gross! Why does it make sounds like that?”
Exploring the Weird contemplates on all things strange. Weirdness probably means something completely different to children than what it does to grown-ups. Is media weird? What about art? The exhibition gathers a cavalcade of works that approach both media and art – and in particular media art. We get to explore the Weird more closely in April: the two-fold exhibition spreads to Annantalo in Kamppi and to MUU Contemporary Art Centre in Cable Factory exhibiting works from professional artists and Annantalo students.
”Sauron. Exactly like the tower of Sauron.”
In the Exploring the Weird children and young have been given a key role both as makers of art but also within the selection process: children have selected all of the works that will be seen in the exhibition. At Annantalo the jury consisted of four student groups of various ages. The students found the selection process intriguing and enjoyed their role as art curators. Looking through all the artworks generated discussion within the groups. Most of the techniques were already familiar but the content sparked discussion particularly on why things were presented the way they were.
The children will also get to ask questions to the artists. This dialog will take the form of videos (video interviews) released as a part of the exhibition.
The exhibition presents works from artists Jan Anderzén, Petteri Cederberg, Rag Elnyg, Katarina Karppinen, Marko Lampisuo, Arttu Nieminen, Sirpa Päivinen, Unna Takalo, Marja Viitahuhta and Timo Wright.
From Annantalo student groups presented are Aikaa, Animaatiotaikurit, Animoi!, Auringonpilkut, Gesso, Jupiter, Konstnärligt arbete, Maalimaakarit, Sutinat, Taikasiveltimet, Väriroiskeet, Väriviikarit and Wroom!. In addition, works are presented from Art Clinic child-adult working pairs as well as 5x2 school groups. In total more than 100 young artists are presented in the exhibition.
Free admission to both exhibitions.
