Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT 1) & Complicité: Figures in Extinction

Experience a moving and timely masterpiece from world-renowned artists. Choreographer Crystal Pite's and director Simon McBurney's award-winning trilogy of dance and theatre is presented at the Dance House Helsinki after the world premiere of its third part. The performance will be interpreted by the unique dancers of the Nederlands Dans Theater, one of the most prestigious contemporary dance companies. Humanity’s impact on the natural world is greater than ever before. Can we ever hope to give a name to what we are losing? What does it mean to bear witness to a destruction in which we are both perpetrator and victim? For the past four years, Crystal Pite and Simon McBurney have weaved their hopes and fears for our current moment into the dance trilogy Figures in Extinction, in which each part is developed in response to the last. The first work, Figures in Extinction [1.0] – a sweeping exploration of species and environments we have lost and are losing – premiered in The Hague in 2022, receiving the top prize for a dance production at the 2022 Nederlandse Dansdagen. The second work, which premiered in February 2024, is a searing look at our need for connection in a separated world. Presented in Helsinki fresh after its world premiere, Figures in Extinction [3.0] is the third and final piece of this moving trilogy, offering a spark in the darkness as to where we might go next through a mixture of dance, video and spoken word. Co-created by Crystal Pite – who is known for her breathtaking and boundary-pushing work in dance – and celebrated actor, writer, director and co-founder of Complicité Simon McBurney, Figures in Extinction is a thought-provoking meditation on the natural world and our relationship to it.
