Traces of Motion / Anni Rissanen

The course Traces of Motion instructed by Anni Rissanen explores the relationship and interaction between dance and visual art through drawing and movement. The course is structured around exercises that open up a dialogue between image and movement, helping participants to discover their own artistic expression. Some of the exercises focus more on physical expression and others more on drawing.

During the workshop, various sensory refinement activities are performed that lead to either drawing or movement exercises. Different ways of drawing or moving are experimented in relation to space and time. The way we work guides us to identify our own habits and find new ways of expression. Different ways of leaving a trace of movement or using the body as a drawing tool are explored. The course focuses on senses, perception, embodiment, movement, and drawing. We will work in groups, pairs, and individually.

If you wish, you can bring your own materials to the workshop: a sketchbook, different drawing tools such as charcoal, Nero Stick, chalk, graphite pencil, etc. Some tools are also available in the space. More information about the tools will be offered during the first meeting.

Anni Rissanen (b. 1981) is a dance artist (M.A.) and teacher (B.A.) who combines dance and visual arts in her work. Her choreographies include Face-to-Face (Time of Dance Festival 2018, Mänttä Art Festival 2021), Turning Point (Forum Box Gallery 2016), Landscapes (Forum Box Gallery 2014), Trace in Me (2014), and Self-portraits (2012).

Rissanen graduated as Master of Dance Arts from the Theatre Academy in 2008, and she has worked as a dancer with Sari Palmgren, Soile Lahdenperä, Maija Mustonen, Kati Raatikanen and Satu Herrala. Since 2009, Rissanen has taught at Zodiak – Center for New Dance, Critical Academy, Kunsthalle Helsinki and Tanssivintti. She also worked as the head teacher of dance at Central Ostrobothnia Adult Education Institute from 2009 until 2016.
